Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since I was nine years old, I have been in a business of my own in some way or another. I filed my first patents in my early twenties and owned my first store front retail business by my early thirties. I began what is now my primary business, The Human Development Center in 1989, providing counseling, behavioral modification and business advice. Today, I continue with a more narrow focus of training and personal development, keynotes and coaching.
What is your primary product or service?
My primary mode of service delivery is classroom training or otherwise known as seminars, workshops and classes. Whether it's in front of a crowd of eight or a room with a thousand, the spoken word, if carefully crafted and expertly delivered, can have a profound impact on a person's knowledge and the direction of his or her life.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
As a boy, I listened to Earl Nightingale, Norman Vincent Peal, Paul Harvey, Nido Qubein and anybody else with a message of success through personal pluck. Growing up very poor with a terrible home life, it gave me hope to think, indeed to believe and know, that with my own efforts, the determinism of my family of origin could be overcome. I did overcome. And I know from my own personal experience and having witnessed that of thousands of others along the way, most people can improve their lot in life, if they want to and they know how. Someone, perhaps like me, can be an instrument of finding the desire to change and the requisite internal strength to make that happen.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I refuse to use the clichés and faddish ideas that come and go through books and "programs". My programs have bases that start with Socrates and go all through history including the knowledge base of what makes for great leaders and managers (self-managers as well) that more than a century of psychological study has given us. Combine that with the findings of people like Edwards Demming, Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie and many others, with my own research and field testing and you get things you won't hear anywhere else. Methods and foundational underpinnings are the bedrock for the applications described and taught in my classes. Just because someone say there are "7 habits" for this or that, or uses some cute abbreviation like TQM, doesn't make what they say new, different or better. It confuses people and keeps them away from the "why this works" aspect of their education leaving the control in the hands of those marketing gurus. Like my work as a psychologist, my goal is to help others not need me as soon as possible. Most of the others are trying to create proselytes that will keep on buying for many years to come. That is an immense and fundamental difference between me and most others.
Which areas do you service?
I have taught programs for most of the companies you've heard of and in almost every major city in both the USA and Canada. If I can get there, it is in my service area.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
The farther from the head you get, the less like the snake it looks. This odd witticism is very true in a business. The less involved in the daily operations an owner is, the more distant is the nature of that business from him. I have always and always will own and operate my business.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
"You changed my life!" There are very few businesses wherein a purveyor can ever hear those words. In ours, if you do it right, you can hear it often. Helping others be more powerful in their personal universe and happier in their own worlds is like no other gift. For someone to say that I've "touched" them in a manner that has done that, is the best compliment anyone can offer.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
A decision carefully thought through and expertly executed, even if it does not work out the way you had hoped or expected, will be a decision you don't regret. ~Phil D'Agostino
